Thank you letter by Penang DAP Secretary and MP for Tanjung Chow Kon Yeow whenvisiting the Cecil Street Market on 4 December 1999 at 4pm to thank voters fortheir support given at the general election.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\-------------------------------------------Although the DAP had been marginalised in Parliament, its MPs would speak outwithout fear or favour to ensure the political, economic, religious and culturalrights of the people are upheld.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\---------------The Penang DAP accept with humility the decision of the people made on theNovember 29 general election where the party could only managed to retain theBatu Lanchang state seat and saw the exit of Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh fromthe Parliament for the first time in 30 years. The Barisan Nasional effective fear campaigns on the Islamic state issue andpolitical instability were so successful that many Chinese decided to opt forthe status quo.The swinging of Chinese votes to the BN has dashed the DAP’s hope of winningabout 25 to 30 Parliament seats to play an important role of ensuring that therewill be greater democracy, freedom, justice and good governance. However, he DAP has been marginalised in Parliament as PAS has emerged strongestwith their impressive winning of 27 Parliament seats.Umno and Pas are likely to turn Parliament into a forum on Islamic policies tocompete for the Malay support which may bring undesirable effect on thenon-Malay populace.Although the DAP had been marginalised in Parliament, its MPs would speak outwithout fear or favour against policies that is detrimental to the political, economic, religious and socio-cultural rights of the people.MCA and Gerakan had received solid Chinese support this election and musttherefore protect the rights of the Chinese.Although the Penang DAP did not performed very well, I am personally thankful tothe voters of Tanjung for electing me to be their MP. I pledge to continue thegood works of Sdr. Lim Kit Siang who served the Tanjung constituency for thepast 13 years. We have not given up our political struggle and after taking stock of thepresent political challenge we would be in the forefront again to bringmeaningful change to our society.I also want to pay my respect to Lai Hon Meng, my running mate in Pengkalan Kotafor taking his defeat gracefully. His determination to continue his politicalstruggle is most admirable and this election defeat has made him a betterpolitical worker for the new millennium.
